The Federal Government has commenced a nationwide vocational skills training programme targeting over 18,000 artisans and unemployed youths across Nigeria.
The initiative, coordinated by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), will be conducted at 229 accredited training centres located in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking during the inauguration in Abuja, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, said the programme is designed to equip participants with practical vocational skills, entrepreneurship knowledge, and trade-specific starter packs to help them become self-employed and financially independent.
According to the minister, the two-week training is aimed at individuals with basic vocational experience who require additional technical skills to improve their productivity and income.
NSIPA National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer, Badamasi Lawal, said participants will receive training in 14 different trades, including agriculture, fashion design, carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical installation, catering, automobile technology, hospitality, jewellery making, masonry, baking, vulcanising, and grinding machine operations.
In addition to technical training, beneficiaries will also undergo entrepreneurship, financial literacy, digital literacy, and business management courses before receiving starter packs to establish their businesses.
Lawal explained that beneficiaries were selected through an inclusive process involving the National Assembly, state governments, traditional and religious leaders, community groups, youth organisations, women's associations, and representatives of persons with disabilities.
He added that the programme will also put thousands of unused vocational starter packs stored in government warehouses into productive use. The distributed equipment will be digitally tracked to prevent misuse or resale by beneficiaries.
