At least 39 people have died after severe flooding caused by Tropical Storm Maysak swept through southern China, with most of the fatalities linked to a dam breach in the city of Nanning, authorities said on Thursday.
Nanning Vice Mayor Ding Wei said 26 people were killed when floodwaters burst through a reservoir dam, sending torrents of water into nearby communities. The death toll rose sharply from an earlier figure of six as rescue teams reached more affected areas.
More than 130,000 residents have been evacuated across the Guangxi region, where days of intense rainfall overwhelmed rivers and reservoirs. Authorities have deployed over 8,000 rescue workers, supported by 5,700 boats and drones, to search for survivors and assist stranded residents.
China's national meteorological agency said some parts of Guangxi received between 10 and 40 centimetres of rain, while the hardest-hit locations recorded more than 90 centimetres of rainfall.
Although floodwaters are gradually receding, officials warned that more heavy rain is expected over the next two days. Emergency crews are clearing mud and debris, repairing damaged roads, and restoring essential services. Electricity has already been reconnected to more than 60,000 homes.
Meanwhile, the flooding also damaged enclosures at Guigang Zoo, allowing more than 100 animals, including alpacas, zebras, miniature pigs, raccoons, porcupines and peacocks, to escape. Zoo authorities have urged the public to avoid approaching the animals and to report any sightings to local officials.
Authorities continue rescue, recovery and relief operations as the region works to recover from one of its deadliest flood disasters in recent years.
