The United States has announced plans to remove Syria from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, marking a major shift in relations with the country's new leadership under President Ahmad Al-Sharaa.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed Congress that the decision will take effect in 45 days unless lawmakers object, a move widely seen as unlikely.
The announcement came after US President Donald Trump met with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Türkiye. Trump praised Al-Sharaa's efforts to unite Syria following the fall of the Assad government in 2024.
Rubio said removing Syria from the blacklist and lifting sanctions would allow the country to attract international investment, rebuild its economy, and create new opportunities for its people.
Syria welcomed the decision, describing it as the end of a dark chapter that began when the country was designated a state sponsor of terrorism in 1979. Syrian officials said the move would strengthen economic recovery, encourage trade and investment, and improve regional stability.
According to US officials, the decision followed formal assurances from the Syrian government that it would not support international terrorism in the future.
Once the change takes effect, only Iran, North Korea, and Cuba will remain on the US list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.
The policy shift is expected to remove major legal obstacles for international businesses seeking to invest in Syria as the country begins reconstruction after years of conflict.
