At least 18 migrants have died while attempting to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco after thousands crossed the border in one of the largest migration surges in recent years.
According to local authorities, many of the victims drowned, while others were killed in a stampede near the Tarajal beach border crossing as crowds rushed through the area.
The Spanish government deployed military personnel and additional security forces to Ceuta to help manage the situation and provide humanitarian assistance. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was expected to visit the enclave alongside Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to assess the crisis.
Officials described the situation as a serious humanitarian emergency, with thousands of migrants, including many unaccompanied children, left without shelter and forced to sleep in parks and on sidewalks. Emergency teams are focusing on treating the injured and providing essential aid.
Videos from the scene showed large groups of migrants, mostly Moroccan nationals, entering Ceuta on foot through the Tarajal area. The reason behind the sudden mass crossing has not yet been officially confirmed.
Spanish authorities continue to monitor the situation as rescue and relief operations remain ongoing.
