World-famous mountaineer Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai, is among 10 climbers feared missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in northern Pakistan.
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the avalanche hit the expedition team on Thursday, and there has been no contact with the climbers since the incident. The group includes climbers from Nepal, the United States, Pakistan, Oman, and China.
Search and rescue teams are preparing an operation, with helicopters expected to be deployed if weather conditions allow. Authorities say efforts are underway to locate the missing climbers as quickly as possible.
Purja, a Nepal-born former British Special Forces soldier, gained international fame in 2019 after becoming the fastest person to climb all 14 of the world's peaks above 8,000 metres, completing the challenge in just over six months. His achievement was later featured in the 2021 Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
Standing at 8,047 metres (26,401 feet), Broad Peak is the 12th-highest mountain in the world and is located in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan expressed hope for the safe rescue of all team members and extended its support to their families during the ongoing search operation.
