A court in Albania's capital, Tirana, has ordered the release of 19 protesters who were detained following violent demonstrations against a planned luxury resort linked to US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
The protesters had been accused of refusing police orders, organizing illegal demonstrations, and disturbing public order. According to their lawyer, Dorian Matlija, two of the protesters will remain under house arrest, 12 must report regularly to judicial authorities, while the remaining five were released without any charges.
Supporters gathered outside the court welcomed the decision, chanting "Free the boys" as the ruling was announced.
The protests, which began in May, were initially sparked by opposition to the construction of a luxury resort in a protected coastal area in southern Albania. Demonstrators argue that the project threatens the environment and reflects widespread corruption.
The movement has since expanded into broader anti-government protests, with thousands calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and demanding greater accountability.
Last Thursday, clashes erupted outside Albania's parliament when protesters attempted to block lawmakers from entering the building. Police responded with tear gas, pepper spray, and water cannons after some demonstrators threw stones, eggs, and other objects. Authorities said 15 police officers were injured and 25 protesters were arrested.
Despite the violence, most demonstrations have remained peaceful. On Saturday, tens of thousands of people gathered again in Tirana, making it the largest protest since the movement began.
The controversial resort project was first announced in 2024, but public opposition intensified after construction equipment and fencing appeared along the protected beaches in late May. The dispute has become a symbol of growing public anger over alleged corruption and government transparency in Albania.
