At least 11 police officers have been killed and 28 others injured after heavily armed attackers stormed a police checkpoint in Pakistan's northwestern Hangu district, near the Afghan border.
According to local authorities, the attackers launched the assault late Wednesday using explosive-laden drones before opening fire on the police post. Security forces engaged the gunmen in a fierce battle that lasted several hours, killing 15 of the attackers.
Among those killed was Deputy Superintendent Diyar Khan, who was leading reinforcements to the scene. The attackers also set three police vehicles ablaze and fled with another police vehicle.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the incident comes just days after a deadly suicide bombing targeting Pakistani soldiers in the nearby Tank district, an attack claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Violence has escalated in Pakistan's border regions in recent months, with security forces increasingly targeted amid renewed tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Islamabad has repeatedly accused militants of operating from safe havens inside Afghanistan, an allegation the Taliban-led Afghan government denies.
Security analysts warn that the latest attack could further strain relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, raising fears of renewed cross-border conflict.
