University of Western Australia Launches Major Scholarship Drive for Students in India

The University of Western Australia (UWA) has announced a major new scholarship initiative aimed at expanding access to higher education for students in India through its UWA India programme.

The initiative is described by the university as one of its most significant country-specific scholarship commitments, designed to make internationally recognised education more accessible to high-achieving students from diverse academic, economic, and regional backgrounds.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma said the programme reflects the university’s long-term commitment to India and its focus on widening educational opportunities.

“We are expanding access to a globally recognised UWA education and ensuring that financial constraints do not limit ambition,” he said, adding that the goal is to help talented students develop global careers.

The scholarship framework will be delivered mainly through tuition fee reductions and will include multiple categories of support such as merit-based awards, global excellence scholarships, equity funding, and regionally targeted assistance. Some funding streams will also involve partnerships with state governments and alumni contributions.

The programme is designed to allow students to combine different types of financial support, significantly reducing the cost of study while maintaining academic standards and selection criteria.

UWA India, which operates campuses in Mumbai and Chennai, will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in fields including science, technology, engineering, and business. These programmes are aligned with global industry needs and India’s growing demand for skilled graduates.

University officials said all scholarships will follow established policies, with clear eligibility requirements published before each admissions cycle. The initiative will begin with the first intake of UWA India admissions and will be reviewed after the first year to assess impact and potential expansion.

Education experts say the move reflects a broader trend of international universities strengthening their presence in India through partnerships, campuses, and financial aid programmes.

By placing scholarships at the centre of its India strategy, UWA aims to improve access to education while strengthening academic and economic ties between Australia and India.
