At least three students have been killed and seven others injured after two students opened fire at a high school in the central Philippines, police have confirmed.
The shooting occurred at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte Province, about 580 kilometres southeast of Manila.
According to police, the attack happened at around 9:00am inside the school premises. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Tacloban City Police Chief Noelito Getigan said the suspects used a .38-calibre firearm and a 9mm gun during the attack.
One of the suspects, a Grade 9 student who is a minor, was arrested shortly after the shooting, while the second suspect later surrendered to authorities.
Police said the injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while additional security personnel were deployed to protect students, teachers, parents and residents around the school.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered a full investigation into the shooting and directed authorities to strengthen security measures in schools and other public places.
The Department of Education described the incident as a serious security concern, condemned the violence and expressed sympathy to the families of those affected.
School shootings are uncommon in the Philippines, although there have been previous isolated incidents involving gun attacks in educational institutions.
