At least two civilians lost their lives in separate Russian drone strikes in Ukraine on Sunday, according to local authorities, as diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing conflict continue in Europe.
Officials said a 56-year-old minibus driver was killed in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region after a Russian drone targeted the area. In a separate incident, a 59-year-old man died in the central Dnipropetrovsk region during a wave of drone and aerial bomb attacks.
Regional authorities reported that another civilian, aged 35, sustained injuries during the attacks, which also caused damage to local infrastructure.
The latest strikes came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky prepared to hold discussions with the leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom in London. The talks are expected to focus on increasing pressure on Russia and exploring options for ending the conflict.
Despite continued fighting, recent battlefield assessments indicate that Ukrainian forces regained more territory than they lost during May for the second consecutive month.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to face economic challenges linked to the war, including rising inflation, higher taxes, labor shortages, and increased borrowing costs. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected claims that the country's economy is in decline, arguing that economic growth remains comparable to that of several European nations.
On Thursday, Zelensky publicly proposed a direct meeting with Putin and reiterated his support for a comprehensive ceasefire aimed at ending hostilities.
The war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has now entered its fifth year, with both sides continuing military operations while diplomatic efforts seek a path toward peace.
