Nigerian troops under Operation HADIN KAI have rescued 10 victims, including National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers, who were abducted during an attack on a secondary school in Lassa community, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The victims were rescued during a coordinated air and ground operation launched after suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists attacked the school while students were sitting for their NECO examinations.
According to the military, the attack occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Monday, prompting the deployment of surveillance aircraft and ground troops to track the attackers.
The Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, said troops engaged the fleeing terrorists near Daggu, leading to a gun battle.
He said the operation resulted in the safe rescue of 10 victims, who were unharmed and receiving medical care and support.
“The operation is still ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Goni said.
The military also disclosed that troops captured seven motorcycles belonging to the insurgents and inflicted casualties on the attackers during the encounter.
However, one soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed during the exchange of fire.
The military described their deaths as a sacrifice made in the fight to protect civilians and restore peace in the North-East.
Operation HADIN KAI said it has intensified efforts with other security agencies to rescue the remaining abducted victims and track down those responsible for the attack.
Authorities also increased security around the affected community and nearby schools to protect residents and students.
The military condemned the attack, describing it as a desperate move by terrorists targeting vulnerable communities due to pressure from ongoing security operations.
