Tinubu Sends Landmark Police Reform Bill to National Assembly

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded a constitutional amendment bill seeking the creation of state police to the Nigerian Senate.

The proposed bill aims to amend sections of the 1999 Constitution to establish a legal framework that would allow states across Nigeria to operate their own police forces.

The move follows growing calls for security reforms and greater involvement of state governments in protecting their territories.

Earlier this year, Tinubu urged the National Assembly to consider constitutional changes to introduce state police, saying it would help tackle terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges.

During his Democracy Day address, the President promised that terrorists, bandits, and their supporters would face the full force of the law.

Tinubu also stated that more than 13,000 terrorists had been neutralised within the past year, adding that terrorism-related deaths had reduced compared to previous years.

However, he admitted that the continued abduction of schoolchildren in some states remains a major concern.

The state police proposal has gained support in recent months, with lawmakers advancing efforts to decentralise policing powers.

The Senate is expected to hold an emergency session to consider the bill, which could become one of Nigeria’s biggest security reforms since the return to democracy.
