Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in Pakistan for a state visit, his first foreign trip since the United States and Israel carried out strikes against Iran.
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed Pezeshkian at a military base near Islamabad on Tuesday.
During the one-day visit, Pezeshkian is expected to hold talks with Pakistani leaders on strengthening cooperation in trade, energy, border security, regional connectivity, and diplomatic relations.
The visit comes after Pakistan and Qatar helped mediate the first round of talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland aimed at ending the conflict.
The discussions resulted in a roadmap toward a possible final agreement, including a temporary easing of sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian funds.
Pezeshkian’s visit is seen as a gesture of appreciation for Pakistan’s role in facilitating the diplomatic process between Tehran and Washington.
