Iran has announced that technical talks with the United States and mediators in Switzerland have ended successfully, opening the way for the next stage of negotiations aimed at ending their more than 100-day conflict.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who led the Iranian technical delegation, said the talks reached agreements on future negotiations, including working groups and mechanisms for implementing any deal.
The discussions followed a high-level meeting on Sunday to monitor the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a framework agreement signed on June 17 by the US and Iranian presidents to end the war.
Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Ghalibaf also said Tehran and Washington agreed on the release of $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets.
US President Donald Trump said the funds would be used to purchase American agricultural products, including food supplies from US farmers.
The US Treasury Department has also approved a 60-day waiver allowing Iran to sell oil and petrochemical products.
Analysts say the move could significantly affect Iran’s economy, as the country may now sell oil at higher prices after years of sanctions.
Meanwhile, Iran has agreed to establish communication with the US to help ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy route.
However, Iranian officials said control of the waterway would not return to the situation before the conflict, while promising to follow international law.
