Sokoto Begins Grassroots Campaign to Reduce Women, Children’s Deaths

The Sokoto State Government has launched a grassroots initiative involving leaders from all 244 wards to reduce maternal and child mortality and improve immunisation coverage.

The programme was introduced during a two-day training and sensitisation workshop organised by the Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.

The workshop brought together Ward Development Committee (WDC) chairmen, women leaders and community representatives from the state’s 23 local government areas to strengthen public participation in healthcare delivery.

The agency’s Director of Advocacy and Social Mobilisation, Dahiru Gada, said ward leaders serve as a link between health authorities and rural communities.

He urged them to encourage pregnant women to attend antenatal clinics, deliver in health facilities and promote access to essential healthcare services.

The programme also focuses on adolescent health, routine immunisation and preventing diseases such as tetanus and diphtheria.

Officials said the initiative will use community-based mobilisation, including house-to-house campaigns, to improve healthcare access and reduce deaths among women and children across Sokoto State.
