The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has directed Muslims across Nigeria to observe the sighting of the new moon of Muharram, which marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
According to a statement from the Sultanate Council:
Monday, June 15, 2026 (29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH) has been set for moon sighting
Muslims are encouraged to observe the sky after sunset
Any confirmed sightings should be reported through traditional channels
Reports are to be submitted to local district or village heads, who will forward them to the Sultanate Council for verification.
The annual moon sighting determines:
The start of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar
The official beginning of the Islamic New Year in Nigeria
Timing of major religious observances throughout the year
Muharram is considered one of the sacred months in Islam and holds special spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide.

The Sultanate Council is expected to announce the official start of Muharram 1448AH after reviewing verified reports from across Nigeria.
