South Korea Nominates Han Seongsook as First Female PM in Two Decades

South Korean President  has nominated  as the country's next prime minister, a move that would make her the first woman to hold the position in two decades if confirmed by parliament.

The presidential office announced the nomination on Sunday, highlighting Han's experience in both government and the technology sector.

Han currently serves as minister for small and midsize businesses and startups. She previously led South Korean technology company  as chief executive, earning recognition for her role in advancing digital innovation.

According to presidential chief of staff , Han is expected to play a key role in accelerating South Korea's artificial intelligence development and ensuring that economic gains are shared more broadly across society.

Kang said Han's leadership could help transform growth generated by the country's strong semiconductor industry and rising exports into opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses as well as ordinary citizens.

Under South Korea's presidential system, the prime minister's position is largely administrative and ceremonial, supporting the president in coordinating government operations and policy implementation.

If lawmakers approve the nomination, Han's appointment would mark a significant milestone for women's representation in South Korean politics and place a prominent technology executive at the centre of the country's AI-driven economic strategy.
