A tragic domestic violence incident in the eastern Iowa city of Muscatine left six family members dead before the suspected gunman took his own life, according to local authorities.
Police responded to reports of gunfire on Monday and discovered four victims inside a residence. Investigators later identified the suspected shooter as a 52-year-old Muscatine resident who had fled the scene before officers arrived.
Law enforcement quickly located the suspect near the city's riverfront area. Authorities said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while officers were attempting to engage with him.
Further investigation led police to two additional crime scenes, where two more victims were found dead. Officials believe all of the victims were related to the suspect, although their identities have not yet been publicly released.
Preliminary findings suggest the violence stemmed from a family-related dispute. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and have not disclosed further details about a possible motive.
The tragedy has shocked residents of Muscatine, a community of about 24,000 people along the Mississippi River, as officials work to determine what led to one of the area's deadliest family-related shootings in recent years.
