At least six people have been killed in a suspected cult-related clash in the Post Office area of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The incident reportedly happened on Sunday night around 8pm. It caused panic in the area, with heightened security presence on Monday morning as police patrol teams were deployed to restore order. Many shops along the usually busy road remained closed.
A resident, identified simply as Abdul, said armed attackers stormed the area and opened fire on victims.
“They came with guns and other weapons and carried out the attack. Six people were killed, including the head of lotto operators around the Post Office area,” he said.
He also claimed the attackers issued threats while leaving the scene, saying they would return. According to him, this is the fourth violent incident recorded in the area recently, and he called for a ban on lotto activities in the location.
Some residents alleged that the violence may be linked to a rivalry between cult groups suspected to be Eiye and Aiye confraternities, although this has not been independently confirmed.
Other sources in the community suggested that the death toll may be higher than six.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, confirmed the incident, saying police were still assessing the situation.
“Yes, there was a cultist attack last night and some killings, but I will give further details when I leave the scene,” he said.
Authorities are expected to release more details as investigations continue.
