At least six people were killed on Sunday after two helicopters collided in mid-air over western Rio de Janeiro, according to Brazilian fire authorities.

Emergency officials said the aircraft crashed into the parking lot of an electric vehicle dealership following the collision, sparking a massive fire that spread rapidly through the area.

"The helicopters collided in mid-air and crashed into the parking lot of an electric car dealership, igniting a fire that engulfed at least 20 vehicles," the fire brigade said in a statement.

Authorities confirmed that six fatalities had been recorded, while emergency teams continued rescue and recovery operations at the scene.

The cause of the collision has not yet been determined, and aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Witnesses reported seeing thick smoke rising from the crash site as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and secure the area.
