Bangladesh has ordered the deployment of troops in Dhaka and five other districts as authorities increase security ahead of the founding anniversary of the Awami League, the political party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The military deployment, which will continue until June 30, comes shortly after soldiers were withdrawn from nationwide duties on June 15, ending nearly two years of operations following the student-led uprising that forced Hasina out of power in August 2024.
Officials said security measures were strengthened over fears that supporters of the former ruling party may attempt to organise rallies or demonstrations despite a ban on the party’s activities.
Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said security agencies had been placed on high alert to prevent unrest.
He added that troops were deployed in Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Faridpur, and Gopalganj based on intelligence reports, with the aim of preventing possible sabotage and supporting civil authorities.
Sheikh Hasina fled to neighbouring India during the 2024 political crisis and has remained there since. In November 2025, a domestic tribunal sentenced her to death in absentia over allegations linked to her government’s crackdown on protesters — a decision she rejected as politically motivated.
The Awami League, once Bangladesh’s most powerful political party, has faced major setbacks since losing power. Several senior party figures have been arrested, investigated, or have left the country.
The government says it is working to maintain stability after one of the country’s most turbulent political periods in recent decades.
