A devastating fire outbreak at a commercial building in Lucknow, India, has killed at least 14 people, with most of the victims reported to be college students.
The fire started on Monday at a three-storey building in the northern Indian city of Lucknow, which housed a library and an animation studio used by students, as well as a veterinary clinic.
Authorities said the blaze began on the middle floor of the building. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak confirmed the deaths, describing the victims as young people from different families. At least four others were injured and taken for medical attention.
Videos shared on social media showed people trying to escape through broken windows as thick smoke spread through the building. Firefighters had to break through part of the structure to reach trapped victims.
An employee of the animation studio said workers had just returned from lunch when they noticed the fire.
“At first, we thought it was a small fire, but soon smoke filled the rooms and corridors,” he said.
Firefighters used emergency equipment, including ventilation systems, to clear smoke and search for survivors.
Building fires are common in India, with officials often blaming poor safety measures, faulty electrical wiring, and lack of proper firefighting equipment.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine the cause of the deadly blaze.
