The European Union is set to hold talks with Taliban representatives in Brussels over migration issues, including the possible deportation of Afghan nationals who no longer have the right to remain in Europe.
Belgium has granted visas to five members of a Taliban delegation to attend the meeting, marking the first time the EU has officially hosted Taliban officials since they returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
The European Commission said the discussions will focus on irregular migration from Afghanistan and the return of rejected Afghan asylum seekers. Officials stressed that the talks do not represent formal recognition of the Taliban government.
The meeting comes as several European countries push for stricter migration policies and seek ways to return migrants considered security risks or those convicted of serious crimes.
Human rights groups have criticised the move, warning that sending people back to Afghanistan could expose them to danger due to the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis and restrictions on basic freedoms.
The Taliban has faced international criticism since taking control of Afghanistan, particularly over limits placed on women’s rights, education, employment and freedom of expression.
EU officials said member states are mainly concerned with individuals who pose security threats, while critics argue that any engagement with the Taliban must prioritise human rights protection.
