Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in London on Sunday to protest an event promoting the sale of land and properties in Israeli settlements located in the occupied West Bank.
The protest took place outside the "Great Israeli Real Estate Event," organised by an Israeli real estate agency. Demonstrators carried placards with messages such as "Stop Israel's Illegal Sale of Stolen Palestinian Land" and condemned what they described as violations of international law.
Jeanine Hourani, an organiser with the Palestinian Youth Movement, said the protest aimed to reject the sale of Palestinian land and highlight concerns over the legality of settlement activities.
The demonstration attracted a significant police presence, while pro-Israel counter-protesters also gathered nearby. According to the Metropolitan Police, 15 people were arrested for various public-order offences during the event.
The real estate exhibition faced criticism from human rights groups, activists and politicians across the United Kingdom. Nearly 100 British lawmakers signed a letter urging the government to prevent the event from taking place, arguing that it promoted activities linked to settlements widely regarded as illegal under international law.
Among the critics was Layla Moran, Britain's first MP of Palestinian descent, who described the event as "unacceptable" and called for stronger measures to prevent similar transactions from occurring in the UK.
The activist group Jewish Anti-Zionist Action also condemned the event, arguing that hosting it in a synagogue lent religious legitimacy to the expansion of settlements.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office reiterated the government's opposition to the advertising and sale of property in Israeli settlements. The spokesperson noted that the government recently updated guidance warning British businesses about the legal and reputational risks associated with economic activities linked to settlements.
Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are widely considered illegal under international law, a position supported by rulings from the International Court of Justice. Israel disputes some interpretations of the legal status of the settlements.
