NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Reaffirms Criticism of AIPAC

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has repeated his criticism of the pro-Israel lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), saying the organisation supports what he described as a harmful political “status quo” in Palestine and the wider region.

Mamdani made the comments at City Hall after facing questions over his previous remarks in which he called AIPAC’s influence dangerous and criticised its spending in US elections.

The mayor said AIPAC had supported policies that, in his view, failed to bring security and justice to people in Palestine and across the region. He also referred to Palestinian deaths in Gaza following the US-backed ceasefire agreement reached in October.

His remarks came after a rally in Vermont where he accused AIPAC of spending millions of dollars through political campaigns to protect its influence.

The comments have drawn strong criticism from some Jewish leaders and politicians. US Representative Josh Gottheimer accused Mamdani of promoting antisemitic ideas, saying criticism of a political organisation should not target Jewish people.

The controversy comes during New York’s Democratic primary elections, where candidates’ positions on Israel and Palestine have become a major issue.

AIPAC’s political action committee has supported candidates viewed as more favourable toward Israel, while some progressive candidates backed by Mamdani have faced criticism over their positions on the conflict.
