The latest 2026 university rankings have revealed significant changes among Nigeria’s leading higher education institutions, with the University of Ibadan returning to the number one position.
The rankings, based on assessments of teaching quality, research output, industry collaboration, and international engagement, highlight the growing competition among universities across the country.
The University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria’s oldest university, climbed from second place in 2024 to reclaim the top position in 2026. The institution continues to earn recognition for its academic excellence, research achievements, and postgraduate programmes.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) ranked second after improving from fourth place in the previous rankings. The university maintained strong performances in research, innovation, and academic development.
Bayero University, Kano (BUK) emerged as one of the biggest movers, securing third place after not appearing in the top 10 rankings two years earlier. The institution's progress has been attributed to improvements in research and academic performance.
Covenant University, which topped the rankings in 2024, dropped to fourth position but remains one of the country's leading private universities. Landmark University followed in fifth place, marking its first appearance among Nigeria’s top five universities.
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, ranked sixth, while the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), secured seventh place following continued growth in science and technology education.
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) placed eighth, maintaining its reputation for academic stability and consistent performance. The University of Jos (UNIJOS) entered the rankings in ninth place, while the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), completed the top 10 despite slipping from its previous position.
