New 4.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Venezuela After Major Disasters

A new earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitude has struck off the northern coast of Venezuela, days after two powerful earthquakes caused widespread destruction and hundreds of deaths.

The latest tremor occurred on Friday, about 61 kilometres northwest of Maracay, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Reports said shaking was felt in Maracay and the capital, Caracas.

The country is still recovering from Wednesday’s major earthquakes, which recorded magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, damaging buildings and causing severe destruction in several areas.

Officials said the death toll has risen, with thousands injured and many people still trapped under collapsed buildings. Rescue teams and local communities continue searching for survivors and providing emergency assistance.

Residents have been helping rescue operations, using vehicles as temporary ambulances and sharing information about missing relatives.

Authorities have restricted access to some of the worst-hit areas to support rescue efforts and maintain safety.
