A Moroccan court has sentenced 29 people, including politicians and sports personalities, to prison terms of up to 12 years after a major drug trafficking and corruption case.
The verdict was delivered in Casablanca following a two-year trial described as one of Morocco’s biggest anti-corruption investigations.
Among those convicted were businessman and former regional council president Abdennebi Bioui, former Wydad Casablanca football club president Said Naciri, and former parliament member Belkacem Mir.
Bioui received a 12-year prison sentence, while Naciri and Mir were sentenced to 10 years each.
The case was linked to an international drug network involving cannabis resin shipments from Morocco to Europe and cocaine operations connected to other regions.
The trial was sparked by testimony from Malian drug trafficker El Hadj Ahmed Ben Brahim, known as the “Pablo Escobar of the Sahara,” who accused former associates of taking control of his assets after his arrest.
The court convicted the defendants on charges including drug trafficking, corruption, money laundering, forgery and illegal gold activities.
Authorities also ordered asset seizures and imposed large financial penalties on key figures involved in the network.
