Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed that his administration will secure the safe release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Makinde made the statement while addressing protesters led by activist VeryDarkMan at the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan.
The victims were abducted on May 15 after gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire LGA. A total of 39 pupils and seven teachers, including a school principal, were taken.
One of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was later killed while in captivity.
The incident triggered public anger and protests demanding the immediate release of the victims. Hundreds of protesters marched through Ibadan before gathering at the government house.
Speaking to the protesters, Makinde said security agencies were conducting a sensitive rescue operation aimed at bringing back the victims safely.
> “The operation to rescue them is a special kind of operation if we don’t want to lose any of those children,” the governor said.
He assured residents that the children would be rescued.
Makinde also rejected negotiations with the abductors, saying such discussions could weaken government authority.
> “If the government starts negotiating with bandits, it means we are surrendering sovereignty to the bandits,” he said.
The governor previously said intelligence reports indicated that the abducted victims were being held within the old Oyo National Park.
He explained that the area covers about 2,500 square kilometres across parts of 10 local government areas, making the rescue operation challenging due to the size and difficult terrain.
Security agencies are continuing efforts to locate and rescue the children and teachers.
