A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck southwest of Rethymno on the Greek island of Crete on Saturday, June 20, 2026, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 30 kilometres, with the epicentre located approximately 91 kilometres southwest of Rethymno.
Seismological agencies reported slightly different measurements, with some recording the quake between magnitude 5.2 and 5.8 as data continued to be reviewed.
The tremor was felt across parts of Crete, including areas around Rethymno, Chania, and nearby towns. Initial assessments indicated that the earthquake was unlikely to have caused significant damage, although light shaking may have led to falling objects or minor damage in some locations.
