Kano State has recorded the highest number of newly registered voters in Nigeria, with 441,845 people registering during the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise as of June 15, 2026.
The figures were contained in a report by the Sub-Committee on ICT and Data Collection, chaired by the Kano State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu.
The report revealed that Kano surpassed all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, showing increased political awareness and civic participation among residents.
According to the report, the achievement was driven by voter mobilisation campaigns and awareness programmes initiated by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The state had established a Voter Registration Task Force Committee in 2025 to encourage eligible citizens, especially youths, to register and take part in the democratic process.
Among the 44 local government areas in Kano, Bichi LGA recorded the highest number of new registrations with 30,806 voters, followed by Kumbotso with 18,701 and Nasarawa with 18,184.
Other areas with strong registration figures included Dawaki Tofa, Bagwai, and Ungogo, while Kunchi, Warawa, Tsanyawa, Garun Malam, and Bunkure recorded lower numbers.
The report noted that registration was stronger in urban and semi-urban areas, particularly within the Kano metropolitan area, while some rural communities recorded fewer registrations.
It also praised the involvement of young people, describing youth participation as a major reason behind Kano’s leading position.
The committee recommended more voter education campaigns in areas with lower registration numbers and urged local authorities to work with communities and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to complete biometric registration.
The report concluded that the registration of over 441,000 new voters reflects Kano residents’ growing commitment to democratic participation and will support future electoral planning.
