Israeli military forces reportedly carried out a series of air and drone strikes across southern Lebanon early Monday, according to Lebanese media reports, despite expectations that a newly announced understanding between Iran and the United States would help reduce hostilities across the region.
The strikes reportedly targeted several locations, including Majdal Zoun and Kfar Tebnit, while artillery shelling was also reported in and around Nabatieh, Kfar Remman, and nearby communities. Additional attacks were said to have occurred in Khiam, Markaba, and Haris in the Bint Jbeil district.
No immediate information was available regarding casualties or the extent of damage caused by the reported attacks.
The developments came shortly after Tehran and Washington announced a memorandum of understanding aimed at easing regional tensions and paving the way for a broader peace process. According to Iranian officials, the agreement is expected to support a halt in military confrontations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.
In response to the security situation, Lebanon’s Civil Defense authorities urged residents displaced by the conflict to delay returning to their villages until official confirmation of any ceasefire arrangements is issued by relevant authorities. Residents were also advised to verify the safety of roads and affected areas before traveling.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council stated that the memorandum is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19. Iranian officials said further negotiations on issues including sanctions relief, nuclear-related matters, and access to Iranian assets would depend on the implementation of commitments by all parties involved.
The situation in southern Lebanon remains tense, with uncertainty surrounding the implementation of any ceasefire measures and concerns over the potential impact of continued military operations on regional stability.
