Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a conditional ceasefire arrangement following United States-mediated discussions in Washington, marking a fresh attempt to reduce hostilities along their shared border.
The agreement, announced after talks involving Israeli and Lebanese officials, calls for an immediate halt to military actions, contingent upon Hezbollah ending all attacks and withdrawing its fighters from southern Lebanon. The deal also proposes the creation of designated security zones where the Lebanese Armed Forces would assume sole authority, excluding all non-state armed groups.
Despite the diplomatic breakthrough, violence continued on Wednesday. Hezbollah reported launching attacks against Israeli troops, while Israeli air strikes reportedly killed at least 10 people in southern Lebanon. Air raid sirens were also activated in northern Israel later in the day after authorities detected a suspected aerial threat.
US officials described the agreement as a reinforcement of an earlier ceasefire understanding reached in May, rather than an entirely new accord. However, questions remain over implementation because Hezbollah was not directly involved in the negotiations.
The latest discussions represented the fourth round of direct contacts between Israeli and Lebanese representatives since fighting escalated in March after Hezbollah resumed attacks in support of Iran. Both sides are expected to reconvene during the week of June 22 in pursuit of a broader and more permanent settlement.
Iran Links Lebanon Conflict to Wider Regional War
Iran has maintained that developments in Lebanon cannot be separated from the broader regional conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any major escalation against Beirut could trigger a renewed and wider confrontation.
He also stated that communication channels between Tehran and Washington remain open, although no significant progress has been achieved in efforts to end ongoing regional hostilities.
Continued Fighting Raises Doubts
The Israeli military said it intercepted projectiles and an unmanned aircraft launched from Lebanese territory. Hezbollah, meanwhile, accused Israel of violating previous ceasefire arrangements and announced additional rocket and drone attacks targeting Israeli military positions.
Lebanese authorities reported numerous Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon, including attacks that allegedly hit ambulances and emergency workers. Health officials said several paramedics and civilians were killed during the bombardments.
The Lebanese army also reported casualties among its personnel, condemning what it described as deliberate targeting of military positions.
Gaza Strikes Claim Civilian Lives
Separately, Israeli air strikes in Gaza City overnight reportedly killed at least nine Palestinians, including four children, according to medical officials at al-Shifa Hospital.
Witnesses described scenes of destruction as residential buildings were hit while families slept. Emergency responders worked through the night to rescue survivors from damaged and burning apartments, while hospitals treated numerous victims for severe injuries and burns.
The latest developments highlight the fragile nature of ceasefire efforts as regional actors continue to grapple with overlapping conflicts across Lebanon, Gaza, and the wider Middle East.
