Evacuation Plan Launched for Ships Stranded in Gulf After Hormuz Crisis

A plan to evacuate hundreds of ships carrying about 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Gulf has begun following a ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States, according to the United Nations maritime agency.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) said it has started contacting the affected ships to begin the evacuation process, although no specific timeline has been announced.

The IMO stated that it had secured the necessary safety guarantees and confirmed conditions for safe navigation to allow the vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said the large-scale operation would be carried out in cooperation with Iran, Oman, other coastal countries in the region, the United States, and the maritime industry.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major global shipping route, and disruptions there have affected vessels and maritime activities in the Gulf.
