European Powers Promise More Aid for Ukraine as NATO Summit Nears

European leaders have pledged to send a strong message of support for Ukraine at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, scheduled for July.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the meeting of the European Group of Five (E5) in Berlin was aimed at showing that Ukraine remains strong despite Russia’s continued aggression.

The talks brought together leaders from Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and United Kingdom ahead of the NATO summit on July 7–8.

The leaders — including Emmanuel Macron, Giorgia Meloni, Donald Tusk, and Keir Starmer — said they would increase support for Ukraine through sanctions, economic pressure on Russia, and assistance to strengthen Ukraine’s energy system.

Merz said a successful NATO summit would help improve relations between Europe and the United States while strengthening unity among European nations.

The discussions followed a video call between the E5 leaders and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

The NATO summit is expected to bring together leaders from 32 countries, including US President Donald Trump.

European leaders also discussed possible involvement in a military mission in the Strait of Hormuz, saying any action would depend on agreements between the United States and Iran.
