The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested an aviation security officer and two other suspects over an alleged attempt to smuggle gold worth about ₦4.4 billion through the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.
According to the EFCC, the officer, identified as an Inspector I with Aviation Security (AVSEC), was intercepted during a surveillance operation carried out by its Kano Zonal Directorate.
The agency alleged that the suspect attempted to conceal about 22.2 kilogrammes of unprocessed gold bars in his trousers in order to bypass airport security checks and illegally export the precious minerals.
Two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the case. The EFCC said one of them allegedly supplied the gold bars, while the other was involved in coordinating the movement of the illicit materials.
During interrogation, investigators claimed that one of the suspects admitted to previously smuggling over 40 kilogrammes of gold within a short period using similar methods.
The EFCC also revealed that one of the suspects was found with several foreign currencies, including Saudi riyals, Turkish lira, Kuwaiti dinar, Philippine pesos, Australian dollars, and others.
All three suspects are currently in EFCC custody and are expected to be charged to court after investigations are completed.
The commission said the arrest is part of a broader crackdown on illegal movement of mineral resources and undeclared cash through Nigeria’s airports, particularly in Kano, where similar cases have recently been recorded.
