More than 140 Venezuelan deportees sent back from the United States are feared to be among victims after powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela shortly after their arrival.
A deportation flight carrying 146 Venezuelans, including women and children, landed in Venezuela hours before twin earthquakes hit the country, according to reports.
Some survivors said they were taken to a hotel in La Guaira, one of the areas worst affected by the earthquakes, where they became trapped when the building collapsed.
One deportee, Lisbeth Portillo, said she escaped the rubble with about 20 others and walked several kilometres in search of help after the disaster.
She described scenes of panic as people fled damaged areas, with some injured and others without shoes or clothing.
“I felt like I was given a second chance,” Portillo said after surviving the collapse.
Another deportee, Jenny Rodriguez, said she was trapped under debris before a fellow passenger helped rescue her.
Authorities said rescue teams are still searching through the rubble, while many of those on the deportation flight remain unaccounted for.
