The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the mother and sister of a suspected terrorist kingpin to 20 years imprisonment each for terrorism-related offences.
The two convicts, Safiya Salihu and Halima Abdullahi, were convicted after admitting to charges brought against them by the Nigerian government.
The prosecution identified them as the mother and sister of Kachallah Ibrahim Battujo, a suspected bandit leader who was killed during a security operation in Kogi State on June 10.
Conviction Over Terrorism Charges
Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa sentenced the women after they pleaded guilty to some of the charges under Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The court found that they assisted Battujo’s activities by passing information to him through phone conversations and withholding information that could have helped security agencies arrest him.
Safiya Salihu was also convicted for failing to disclose information about her son’s alleged terrorist activities, while Halima Abdullahi was convicted for concealing information about weapons linked to her brother.
Security Operation Killed Bandit Leader
Battujo was reportedly killed during a joint operation involving the military, police, intelligence agencies and local security groups in a forest near Iluke, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Authorities accused him of involvement in attacks and attempted kidnappings, including a recent attack linked to Government Secondary School, Iluke.
The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently and directed that the convicts undergo rehabilitation after completing their prison terms.
