A small aircraft reportedly crashed into Beijing’s tallest skyscraper, CITIC Tower (China Zun), on Friday, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to Reuters.
Police quickly sealed off roads around the 108-storey building, while authorities have not yet released official details about the incident.
Witnesses said the aircraft was about the size of a car and struck a high floor of the building, damaging two glass panels. No official information about casualties has been announced.
A courier who was near the scene said he heard a loud crash, “louder than fireworks,” before seeing the aircraft lodged in the building. He said he recorded the scene but later deleted the video after police warned people not to film.
Several police vehicles and fire trucks were deployed around the area, and officers reportedly asked bystanders to leave and remove photos or videos of the incident.
A nearby office worker said she saw a large object covered with a blue tarp on the road beside the tower, along with emergency vehicles.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the crash was accidental or deliberate. The incident has raised questions because airspace around central Beijing is heavily restricted.
CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, is the headquarters of the state-owned CITIC Group and is one of China’s most recognizable skyscrapers.
