A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced four members of a terrorist group to death by hanging for their involvement in the deadly 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
The judgment was delivered after the court found the defendants guilty of multiple terrorism charges linked to the June 5, 2022 incident, which left more than 40 worshippers dead and over 100 others injured during a Pentecost service.
According to the court, the convicts were part of an armed extremist cell operating in Nigeria and participated directly in the assault, which involved the use of explosives and assault rifles. The prosecution presented witness testimonies, confessional statements, and forensic evidence to support its case.
One survivor, a Catholic priest, described the attack as chaotic and violent, noting that explosives were detonated inside the church, causing panic and mass casualties.
The court ruled that the evidence against the four defendants was overwhelming and proved their involvement beyond reasonable doubt. A fifth defendant was discharged and acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The case is one of the most significant terrorism trials in Nigeria in recent years, highlighting ongoing security challenges and the judicial system’s efforts to address extremist violence.
