The Abia State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its planned strike action following the release of a kidnapped orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Uche Bonaventure Aguocha.
Dr. Aguocha, a former chairman of the association in the state, was abducted on May 26, 2026, and regained his freedom on June 2 after spending nine days in captivity. His release was confirmed in a joint statement by the NMA state chairman, Dr. Ezenwa Ezuruike, and the secretary, Dr. Clement Ifenkoronye.
The association had earlier announced plans for an indefinite strike beginning June 2 in protest over the kidnapping but reversed the decision after confirming his safe return.
The NMA expressed appreciation to security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, as well as the state governments of Abia and Imo, for their roles in securing the doctor’s release.
It also thanked members of the public and healthcare workers for their support during the incident.
While welcoming his release, the association condemned the rising cases of kidnappings targeting medical professionals, warning that such incidents threaten healthcare delivery and the safety of practitioners.
The group called on government authorities to strengthen security around health workers and ensure perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
