Former Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has died at the age of 80 while living in exile in Saudi Arabia, according to Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
State media reported on Thursday that Hadi passed away at his residence in Riyadh after years away from Yemen following the outbreak of the country’s civil war.
Hadi served as Yemen’s internationally backed president from 2012 until 2022, overseeing a turbulent period marked by political unrest, armed conflict and a worsening humanitarian crisis. He assumed office after longtime ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down during the Arab Spring uprising.
In 2015, Hadi fled Yemen after Houthi fighters seized the capital, Sanaa, and placed him under house arrest. He later relocated to Saudi Arabia, where he remained for the rest of his life while leading the government from exile.
Current Presidential Leadership Council chief Rashad al-Alimi praised Hadi’s role in defending Yemen’s republican system and announced three days of national mourning.
Hadi transferred his presidential powers to the Presidential Leadership Council in April 2022 amid efforts to support a United Nations-brokered ceasefire. Although the truce reduced large-scale fighting, Yemen remains divided between Houthi-controlled areas in the north and government-aligned factions in the south.
The prolonged conflict has left hundreds of thousands dead and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions continuing to depend on aid.
Hadi is survived by his wife and six children.
