The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is worsening rapidly, with confirmed infections rising sharply as international health officials intensify response efforts.
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province and the center of the outbreak, on Saturday. During his visit, he emphasized the importance of local community involvement in controlling the spread of the disease.
According to Congolese health authorities, confirmed Ebola cases increased to 225 by Friday, nearly doubling from 121 cases reported just two days earlier. The outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists.
The WHO has declared the outbreak a global health emergency, while humanitarian organizations warn that the virus is spreading at an alarming pace. More than 1,000 suspected cases and over 220 suspected deaths have also been reported across the country.
The outbreak has already crossed into neighboring Uganda, where health officials have confirmed nine infections and one death. International partners, including the European Union and the United States, have provided medical supplies and financial support to strengthen containment efforts.
Health experts say ongoing conflict, attacks on medical teams, and resistance to public health measures are complicating the response. Nevertheless, WHO officials remain hopeful that the DRC's experience in managing previous Ebola outbreaks will help bring the current epidemic under control.
Regional governments have increased surveillance and prevention measures as concerns grow over the potential for further cross-border transmission.
