US President Donald Trump has announced that American and Nigerian forces carried out a joint military operation that reportedly killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a senior figure linked to the Islamic State group.
According to Trump, the operation was conducted in Nigeria through coordinated efforts between US troops and the Nigerian military. He described al-Minuki as one of ISIS’s top global operatives and claimed the mission would significantly weaken the group’s activities in Africa and beyond.
Reports say Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, also known as Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Mainuki, was associated with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and operated mainly across the Sahel region.
Security analysts say he was believed to have played a key role in coordinating extremist operations, funding networks and communications linked to ISIS activities in parts of West Africa.
The Sahel region has remained a major security concern in recent years due to growing attacks by armed extremist groups operating across countries including Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Burkina Faso.
US authorities had previously designated al-Minuki as a global terrorist in 2023 over his alleged involvement in international terror-related activities.
The reported operation marks another major counterterrorism effort involving international cooperation between the United States and African security forces.
