At least seven Palestinians have been killed and dozens injured following Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City, according to medical sources and local officials. The strikes hit a residential building in the Rimal neighbourhood and a civilian vehicle on Friday.
Among the dead are three women and a child, while around 45 people were reported injured, several in critical condition.
Israeli authorities said the operation targeted Izz al-Din al-Haddad, described as a senior Hamas military commander and one of the planners of the October 7 attacks. However, it has not been confirmed whether he was killed in the strike. Hamas has not issued a statement on the claim.
Witnesses reported that multiple missiles struck the residential building, causing a large fire and widespread panic as residents fled the area. Civil defence officials said the building housed hundreds of displaced people, raising concerns over the scale of civilian exposure.
A separate strike on a vehicle in another part of Gaza City also contributed to the death toll, according to medical sources cited by Anadolu Agency.
The attacks took place on the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, a day commemorated by Palestinians to remember the mass displacement that occurred during the 1948 war. The timing has added to tensions and public grief in Gaza, where repeated military operations continue despite ongoing ceasefire claims.
Israeli officials, including the prime minister and defence minister, said the targeted individual was responsible for attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers, and accused him of obstructing efforts linked to a proposed Gaza peace plan.
Despite earlier ceasefire announcements, local health authorities in Gaza report that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed since last October, as intermittent strikes continue across the territory.
The situation remains highly volatile, with no independent confirmation yet of the status of the intended target and ongoing reports of casualties rising from the affected areas of Gaza City.
