A proposal advancing through the United States Congress could significantly strengthen military and defence cooperation between the US and Israel, bringing the two allies closer through joint weapons development, technology sharing, and integrated defence production.
The measure, included in the House Armed Services Committee's draft of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), seeks to establish a formal framework for expanded collaboration between the two countries' defence sectors.
If approved, the initiative would require the US Secretary of Defense to appoint a dedicated official to oversee military cooperation with Israel, including joint research projects, weapons manufacturing, artificial intelligence applications, cyber capabilities, and advanced defence technologies.
Supporters argue that the proposal would improve military readiness and strengthen strategic cooperation amid growing security challenges in the Middle East. Critics, however, warn that the measure could deepen Israel's influence within the US defence industry and further intertwine the military priorities of both nations.
The legislation comes at a time of heightened regional tensions following recent conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, as well as ongoing international scrutiny of Israel's military operations in Gaza.
The proposal still faces several legislative hurdles, including approval by the House Armed Services Committee, passage by the full House of Representatives, and consideration in the Senate before it can become law.
For decades, the United States has been Israel's largest military supporter, providing billions of dollars in assistance annually. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently indicated that Israel aims to reduce its dependence on direct US military aid over the next decade, favouring stronger defence-industrial cooperation instead.
If enacted, the plan could mark a major shift in US-Israel relations, moving beyond traditional aid arrangements toward a more integrated military and technological partnership.
