The Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims to embody the true teachings of Islam by becoming agents of peace, reconciliation, and social harmony.
Speaking at the inauguration and handover of an ultra-modern mosque built in honour of Asiwaju Khamis Badmus’ 80th birthday in Osogbo over the weekend, the Sultan stressed that proper understanding of Islam should produce disciplined and compassionate individuals committed to peaceful coexistence.
Represented at the event by the President of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), Alhaji Rasak Oladejo, the Sultan said religion should transform believers internally, turning intolerance into friendship and conflict into cooperation.
“True religious understanding should produce disciplined, compassionate and enlightened Muslims who build peace and not destroy it,” he said, adding that Muslims must strive to be “agents of peace and reconciliation.”
He also noted that the purpose of mosques goes beyond daily prayers, emphasizing their role as centres for moral guidance, education, and community development.
Supporting this view, the National Missioner of the Ansar-u-Deen Society, Sheik Abdulrahman Ahmad, said mosques should serve as hubs for resolving social, economic, and political issues within society.
He referenced the historical role of the Quba Mosque in Madinah, explaining that early Islamic places of worship functioned not only as prayer spaces but also as institutions for education, governance, and public welfare.
According to him, the gradual reduction of mosques to prayer-only spaces has contributed to challenges facing the global Muslim community today, urging a return to their broader original function.
The ceremony was attended by prominent Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, and political figures, including the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi; the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdulrosheed Olabomi; and former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, among others.
