Tensions flared in parts of Cape Town this week after students from two secondary schools staged disruptive protests calling for foreign nationals to leave their schools, leading to violence and widespread disruption in the Kraaifontein area.
The disturbance reportedly involved learners from Masibambane Secondary School and Hector Peterson High School, who left classrooms and gathered in large numbers, bringing movement and daily activities in the area to a halt.
Eyewitness accounts and circulating videos showed groups of uniformed students chanting in the streets, blocking roads, and looting roadside stalls as the situation escalated. Motorists were also affected as traffic was disrupted across key routes.
Authorities said the situation turned violent after some protesters allegedly attacked a foreign national and damaged property belonging to traders and school staff. Some learners were also reported to have thrown stones at passing vehicles.
Police confirmed that Public Order Police units were deployed to restore calm after receiving reports of large-scale student demonstrations linked to concerns over the presence of foreign nationals in schools.
According to police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, officers moved in around 8:30 a.m. after the protests spread across multiple locations, adding that order was eventually restored in the area.
The Western Cape Education Department said the unrest appeared to have begun at one school before spreading to neighbouring institutions and surrounding communities. Officials have since launched investigations into the incident.
Education authorities and law enforcement agencies are now monitoring the situation closely to prevent further escalation and to address underlying tensions within the affected communities.
The incident has raised renewed concern in South Africa over rising anti-immigrant sentiment among youths and the recurring impact of xenophobic tensions on schools and public safety.
