Singapore Foreign Minister Makes Rare Visit to North Korea, Holds Talks on Bilateral Relations

Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan has met North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Pyongyang during a rare diplomatic visit that included discussions on strengthening bilateral relations, according to North Korean state media.

The meeting, reported by KCNA, also covered broader regional and global issues, although no detailed information was released about the content of the discussions.

Balakrishnan is expected to travel on to South Korea following his stop in the North, marking an uncommon diplomatic trip that includes engagement with both Koreas.

The visit is notable given Singapore’s past role in hosting the 2018 summit between former U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a historic meeting aimed at advancing nuclear negotiations and easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has not recently responded to renewed calls for dialogue from Washington, and diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang remains limited.
