Russia Accuses US of Blocking Diplomat From Attending UN Security Council Meeting

Russia has criticised the United States for refusing to grant a visa to senior diplomat ahead of a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York.

Speaking at the council session, Russia’s UN envoy said Moscow viewed the decision as a violation of Washington’s obligations under the 1947 UN Headquarters Agreement, which requires the US to allow foreign officials access to UN meetings.

Nebenzia said Alimov, who oversees UN-related affairs for Russia, was originally expected to represent Moscow at the session but was unable to attend because the visa was not approved despite repeated requests.

Russia also argued that the move showed disrespect toward , which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of May.

The US State Department did not immediately comment on the accusations.

The dispute comes amid complicated relations between Washington and Moscow, despite recent diplomatic contacts between US President and Russian President over efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The visa controversy also follows similar complaints from , whose Foreign Ministry recently said Foreign Minister cancelled plans to attend a UN Security Council meeting because of visa-related difficulties.
